Sunrise Zest Recipe

Sunrise Zest Recipe

Bursting with color, flavor, and revitalizing energy, Sunrise Zest is a vibrant citrus drink that perfectly captures the essence of a refreshing morning. Typically made with a mix of freshly squeezed orange juice, lemon or lime, a splash of pomegranate or grenadine for that signature "sunrise" effect, and a hint of ginger or mint, this beverage is the ultimate non-alcoholic pick-me-up. Served chilled or over ice, it’s a beautiful way to start your day — or enjoy as a healthy midday refreshment.

Ingredients

Navel Oranges2 large
Lemon (or Lime)1 medium
Fresh Ginger Root1-inch piece
Honey or Maple Syrup1-2 tablespoons (or to taste)
Cold Water1.5 - 2 cups (360-480 ml)

Cooking Steps

Step 1: Prepare the Citrus and Ginger

  1. Wash the oranges and lemon/lime thoroughly.
  2. Zest half of the lemon/lime and set the zest aside for garnish.
  3. Juice the oranges and lemon/lime. Aim for about 1 cup of combined citrus juice.
  4. Peel and roughly chop or grate the fresh ginger root.

Step 2: Blend the Zest

  1. In a blender, combine the freshly squeezed citrus juice, chopped/grated ginger, honey or maple syrup (start with 1 tablespoon), and ½ cup of the cold water.
  2. Add a pinch of turmeric powder now, if using.
  3. Blend on high speed for about 30-60 seconds, until the ginger is well pulverized and the mixture is smooth.

Step 3: Strain and Combine

  1. Place a fine-mesh sieve over a pitcher or large serving glass.
  2. Pour the blended mixture through the sieve, using the back of a spoon to press down on the solids to extract all the liquid. Discard the strained ginger pulp.
  3. Add the remaining 1 to 1.5 cups of cold water to the strained juice. Stir well.

Step 4: Taste and Adjust

  1. Taste the Sunrise Zest Refresher.
  2. Adjust the sweetness by adding more honey or maple syrup if desired.
  3. Adjust the tanginess by adding a bit more lemon/lime juice if you prefer it more tart.

Step 5: Chill and Serve

  1. For best flavor, refrigerate the drink for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld and chill thoroughly.
  2. When ready to serve, fill glasses with ice cubes.
  3. Pour the Sunrise Zest Refresher into the glasses.
  4. Garnish with the reserved lemon/lime zest and a fresh mint sprig if desired.

Extra Tips for Your Sunrise Zest

  • Ginger Intensity: If you prefer a stronger ginger kick, you can increase the amount of ginger. For a milder taste, use a smaller piece.
  • Sweetness Control: The sweetness of oranges can vary. Always start with less sweetener and add more to taste.
  • Sparkling Version: For a fizzy delight, use sparkling water (or club soda) instead of still water for the final dilution in Step 3.
  • Beyond Drinking: You can freeze this mixture into popsicles for a refreshing frozen treat!
  • Batch Making: This recipe can easily be doubled or tripled for serving a crowd.
