Bocadillo Recipe

The Bocadillo is a traditional Spanish sandwich made with a crusty baguette-style bread called barra de pan and filled with a variety of simple yet flavorful ingredients. Common fillings include Spanish omelet (tortilla de patatas), cured meats like jamón serrano or chorizo, cheese, or even tuna. Loved across Spain as a quick meal or snack, the Bocadillo reflects the essence of Spanish cuisine—wholesome, unfussy, and bursting with authentic flavor.

Ingredient

For the Bocadillo:

Spanish Baguette or Sub Roll1 (about 6 inches long)
Sliced Lomo de Pollo (chicken loin)4-6 slices
OR  Tortilla Española (Spanish Omelet)1-2 slices (about 1-inch thick)
Sliced Cheese (optional)2 slices
For Flavor:
Extra Virgin Olive Oil1 tablespoon
Garlic Clove1 (cut in half)
Ripe Tomato1 (cut in half)
SaltA pinch

Cooking Steps

Step 1: Prepare the Bread

  1. Slice the Spanish baguette or sub roll lengthwise, but do not cut all the way through.
  2. If desired, you can lightly toast the bread in a toaster or a dry skillet until the inside is slightly warmed and crispy.

Step 2: Add the Base Flavors

  1. For an authentic base, take the cut half of a garlic clove and rub it over the inside of the bread. Then, do the same with the cut half of a ripe tomato, squeezing it slightly to release the juices and pulp onto the bread.
  2. Drizzle the inside of the bread with a generous amount of extra virgin olive oil and a small pinch of salt.

Step 3: Add the Filling

  1. Carefully place your chosen filling inside the bread.
  • For Lomo de Pollo: Layer the sliced chicken and cheese (if using) inside the bocadillo.
  • For Tortilla Española: Slice a piece of tortilla and place it inside the bread. The warm, soft omelet will melt slightly into the bread.
2. Close the sandwich.

Step 4: Serve

  1. Serve the bocadillo immediately. It is best enjoyed fresh, allowing the simple flavors to shine.

Extra Tips for a Perfect Bocadillo

  • Simplicity is Key: A bocadillo's strength is in its focus on a few great ingredients. Avoid adding too many things that would distract from the main flavor.
  • The Bread: The bread is arguably the most important component. It should be crusty on the outside but light and airy on the inside, so it can be pressed without becoming dense.
